Monument record 10147 - Medieval cellars on Northgate Street

Please read our .

Summary

Archaeological investigations at the Northgate Brewery Site (corner of Northgate Street and Water Tower Street) recorded evidence of limited medieval activity. The excavations were carried out by P.J. Davey of the Grosvenor Museum following the demolition of the former brewery. A series of cellars of possible medieval date were recorded. Although still in existence at the time of demolition of the brewery they had been filled with demolition debris by the contractor and required re-excavation. Despite a number of modern alterations including 20th century partition walls, the evidence suggests they were originally constructed in the later medieval period, the walls of which cut the 14th century road surface.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations at the Northgate Brewery Site (corner of Northgate Street and Water Tower Street) recorded evidence of limited medieval activity. The excavations were carried out by P.J. Davey of the Grosvenor Museum following the demolition of the former brewery. (1)

A series of cellars of possible medieval date were recorded in area 001 of the excavations. Although still in existence at the time of demolition of the brewery they had been filled with demolition debris by the contractor and required re-excavation. Despite a number of modern alterations including 20th century partition walls, the evidence suggests they were originally constructed in the later medieval period, the walls of which cut the 14th century road surface (CHER 10004). Two mason’s marks were also identified. (1)

It is suggested from the style of the masonry and the presence of the mason’s marks that they dated to the 14th or 15th century. (1)
