Monument record 10145 - Late medieval cellar at Cuppin Street

Please read our .

Summary

Archaeological investigations carried out on the south side of Cuppin Street by S Ward in 1986 recorded extensive evidence of activity from the medieval and post medieval periods. Although very little evidence was encountered in 1972 due to site safety issues, the later excavations encountered several phases of activity. A medieval cellar was recorded during the excavations, although the exact date of construction was undetermined – it may have belonged to the 15th-16th century rebuild or the earlier medieval structure – the cellar survived the division of the property in the 18th century and continued in use until 1986 when it was demolished along with the associated houses.
