Full Description
Traces of a medieval stone cellar was uncovered during repairs to a drain in a passage between the Methodist Church and School in St John Street in June 1958. The evidence comprised the remains of a stone arch at a depth of c0.88m below present ground level. The arch appeared to have originally been segmental, running north-south across the passage between the two buildings and was probably 3.7m wide, several fragments of medieval pottery were recovered from beneath it. On the south side it joined a sandstone wall running east.
The remains are interpreted as part of cellar of a medieval house backing onto the city ditch outside the city wall. (1).
