Full Description
Archaeological investigations at Linenhall Street in 1961 identified traces of a post medieval furnace. The investigations were carried out by F.H. Thompson and D.F. Petch primarily with the aim of identifying the Roman defences however a substantial amount of medieval and post medieval features were also identified.
Evidence for the furnace was recorded towards the centre of Trench 1 more or less overlying the Roman outer ditch and consisted of a rectangular setting of sandstone approximately 1.20m wide internally with an ashy fill. It was dated to the 17th – 18th century by a small quantity of pottery from the fill. (1)
