Full Description
Archaeological investigations at Linenhall Street in 1961 identified a number of medieval pits across the site. The investigations were carried out by F.H. Thompson and D.F. Petch primarily with the aim of identifying the Roman defences however a substantial amount of medieval and post medieval features were also identified.
The evidence comprised three pits of a probable medieval date in trench 1. Further pits were encountered in trench 2 cutting an earlier structure (CHER 9014/2), in trench 7 containing quantities of medieval to post medieval pottery and animal bone and in trench 12. All were encountered in a layer of brown stony soil producing a few sherds of medieval pottery. (1)
