Summary

Archaeological investigations at Linenhall Street in 1961 identified traces of medieval robbing of the Roman fortress walls. The investigations were carried out by F.H. Thompson and D.F. Petch primarily with the aim of identifying the Roman defences. The evidence suggests the rampart wall survived into the medieval period when a period of robbing of the Roman stone was recorded.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations at Linenhall Street in 1961 identified traces of medieval robbing of the Roman fortress walls. The investigations were carried out by F.H. Thompson and D.F. Petch primarily with the aim of identifying the Roman defences however a substantial amount of medieval and post medieval features were also identified.

The evidence suggests the rampart wall survived into the medieval period when evidence robbing consisting of a number of cuts for the removal of the Roman stone in trench 2 of the Roman stone was recorded. (1)
