Full Description

Archaeological investigations at Linenhall Street in 1961 identified a substantial layer of post medieval accumulation. The investigations were carried out by F.H. Thompson and D.F. Petch primarily with the aim of identifying the Roman defences however a substantial amount of medieval and post medieval features were also identified.

The evidence consisted of a substantial layer of thick black soil covering almost the entire length of Trench 1 cutting across the Roman defences. The layer contained quantities of post medieval material. The same layer was also identified in trench 2 (1)
