Full Description

Two cellars and a number of medieval pits were encountered during construction work at Commonhall Street between 1954 and 1956 in advance of construction of a new printing works. The work involved the excavation of three cellars, and the observation of a fourth, and ten trenches.

Two pits of a probable medieval date were encountered in cellar II. It is uncertain how these cellars relate to the medieval archaeology recovered within them, however. In addition, a number of medieval pits were recorded in several of the excavated trenches across the site, the pits contained few sherds of medieval material but they are not discussed in detail.
