Full Description
A scatter of ruined masonry was recorded overlying the Roman material during archaeological investigations to the east of Goss Street in 1948. The evidence comprised a layer of thick black soil some 0.60m thick containing very little material interpreted as a garden soil layer during the medieval period. This was followed by a significant layer of sandstone blocks dated to the mid 15th century by the discovery of a number of heavily worn pennies of Henry VI in trench 4. This was subsequently covered by another layer of garden soils lasting until the 18th century when the area was developed. (1)
