Full Description
Archaeological investigations carried out on the east side of the present Goldsmith House (formerly the Assay Office) between 1968 and 1971 encountered the remains of a north-south aligned Roman barrack block of the First Cohort. The excavation archive has apparently since been lost however and only a few notes survive. Evidence of a barrack block of the normal plan was encountered. Two periods of timber construction were noted in addition to the later stone foundations (1).
