Full Description
Archaeological investigations to the rear of 22-28 Foregate Street recorded several medieval pits in trench 2 of the excavations. Several ‘clay tub’ pit features were also identified in trench 2, however their date and function could not be reliably determined.
The material filling these pits included substantial quantities of cattle horns that showed signs of soaking – perhaps indicating butchery or leather working nearby. Although no dating evidence was recovered, it was suggested by the excavator that they were medieval, perhaps 13th or 14th century, in date. A number of other medieval pits were recorded across the site but not discussed in detail (1)
