Full Description
Archaeological investigations between Weaver Street and Nicholas Street in 1994 encountered substantial evidence of a series of post medieval domestic housing in a number of trenches. Cartographic evidence indicates the areas excavated lay within the back yard area of a number of plots fronting onto Nicholas Street and within the street frontage of plots fronting onto Weaver Street. The late 19th century Ordnance Survey Town Plans map indicates the area was occupied by ornamental gardens, back yard areas and structures either attached to or close to the street frontage properties.
Trench 1, excavated on the Nicholas Street frontage encountered traces of modern walls associated with the houses overlying earlier post medieval boundary walls. Trenches 2 & 3, located within the back yard areas recorded evidence of brick outhouses and cultivation or garden soils while trench 4 excavated on the Weaver Street frontage recorded evidence of post medieval cellarage and further cultivation or garden soils.
