Monument record 10358 - Medieval Building West of Roadway, Surface and Building Debris, Royal Infirmary (North)

Please read our .

Summary

Part of an extensive series of medieval remains excavated at the Royal Infirmary site in 1998 was a stone building, with an external pebble surface and an area of demolition rubble that may have been from an adjacent building. Pottery found in the surface and in the rubble helped date the structures. Another building with a drain, a substantial, well-built roadway and post medieval features were also recorded in this northern part of the site.

Full Description

Extensive archaeological remains dating from Roman to post medieval times were recorded during 1998 excavations at the Royal Infirmary, building upon earlier archaeological work carried out in 1992 (ECH3601). In addition to a well-made road with a central drain (CHER 10357), a number of walls, surfaces and areas of what were interpreted as demolition rubble were identified (1).

One building to the west of the road (this monument) appeared to have walls made of different materials, with a southern wall of sandstone rubble and an eastern wall of large squared sandstone blocks, and a possible internal floor of clay (1). The position of this building suggests that it was somehow associated with the road. North of this building was a possible external pebble surface containing medieval pottery and areas of demolition rubble, also containing medieval pottery, that was thought to derive from an adjacent building (1).

Another building with a drain (CHER 10359), the substantial, well-built roadway (CHER 10357) and post medieval features were also recorded in this northern part of the site (1, 2, 3).
