Full Description
A substantial layer of soil dating to the post medieval period before the construction of St Martin’s Lodge was identified during an archaeological evaluation at the site in 2011 (1). Seen largely in trenches excavated immediately north of the Lodge, was a horizon of variable thickness containing fragments of sandstone, charcoal, some pottery and clay tobacco pipe fragments.
These horizons protected the underlying Roman remains and pre-dated the construction of features associated with St Martin’s Lodge (1). At one location was a complex series of cuts and fills, containing disturbed residual material (1).
