Full Description
The Corn Exchange was built in 1859 on the site of the earlier Manchester Hall (CHER 10346) and designed by George Chivas. The original structure was built of red sandstone in the Gothic style and included a large top it hall entered through a long passage from Eastgate Street. It included a range of offices on the Cathedral side of the building with space for 40 stands on the south side. The corn exchange was demolished in 1928.
In 1909 an early cinema – named the Will hunter’s Picturedrome – was opened in the Corn Exchange and continued to operate until 1924. (1)
