Full Description
During extensive excavations at the site of the Royal Infirmary in 1992, a sandstone rubble footing for a wall aligned east to west was found (in Trench VIII) (1). This footing was only one course deep and sealed a loam deposit that contained a large group of mid-seventeenth to early eighteenth century finds, indicating that the wall dates to the early eighteenth century (1).
The excavators concluded that the foundation must have belonged to a structure which pre-dated the construction of the Infirmary, and because it was not very substantial, it was assumed to not have supported a major structure (1).
