Summary

Pepper Street, running east from Bridge Street to the Newgate at the City Walls has been referred to as ‘peperstrate’ since the mid 13th century. The origins of the name is uncertain, but it is possible that 'pepper' is a figurative description of some feature common to these roads. They may have been dusty highways, used by itinerant pedlars or particularly warm work to traverse.
