Duke Street was originally known as Claverton Lane in the medieval period, only changing its name to Duke Street in the 18th century after the then sheriff of Chester. Claverton is mentioned as a manor in Domesday.

Full Description

Duke Street replaced an earlier medieval street called Claverton or Clayton lane. First mentioned in 1202 as ‘clauertunelane’ the name slowly evolved over time. It appears to have been associated with a medieval manor mentioned in Domesday with eight burgesses settled within it. It’s name was changed in the 18th century to Duke Street after the then sheriff of Chester. (1)
