Summary

Crook Street is first mentioned in 1220-50, it originally extended north from Watergate Street as far as Princess Street although its path has since been curtailed by the construction of the Forum Shopping Centre in the 1960s, it now terminates at Hamilton Place.

Full Description

Crook Street is first mentioned in 1220-50 as ‘Crokeslone’ (1) and has been variously called ‘Gerrards Lane’ and ‘Crokislone’, it was one of the streets listed in 1567 by Richard Dutton, then mayor of Chester (3). It originally extended north from Watergate Street as far as Princess Street although its path has since been curtailed by the construction of the Forum Shopping Centre in the 1960s, it now terminates at Hamilton Place. Lavaux’s map of 1745 depicts a square two thirds of the way along the road at the former Matthew Henry Chapel. (5)
