Full Description

Weaver Street, leading south from Watergate Street appears to be a somewhat later addition first appearing in the mid 16th century. An earlier, medieval route known as ‘Alvin’s Lane’ or ‘St Alban’s lane in the mid 13th century is thought to have preceded it. It is recorded in a list of street names produced in 1567 by Richard Dutton, mayor of Chester (2). Its continuation south of White Friars to Cuppin Street is a modern extension sometime after the 1960s. It’s name is suggestive of a concentration of weaving activity. (1)

Alban Lane is recorded in the medieval period, however, and is first mentioned in around 1260 as 'Aluenislone' (1)
