Full Description

Eastgate Street is one of the four main streets of Chester leading from the Cross to the Eastgate. The road may have its origins in the eastern part of the Roman via Principalis (CHER 8595) with evidence of an earlier road surface believed to be Roman underlying the present street. It is first referred to as vijcus orientalis in 1190 and by its English spelling from the mid 13th century onwards. (1)

Evidence of several former road surfaces were identified underlying the present road during archaeological investigations in 2012. The cobbled surfaces were identified in trench 169 of the investigations and appeared to date to the medieval and post medieval periods. (5)
