Full Description

Bridge Street is one of the four main streets of Chester leading from the Cross in the centre of the city to the Bridge Gate at the river Dee. The road may have its origins in the Roman via praetoria (CHER 8439). It is first mentioned as vicus ad pontem in 1121. (1)

Archaeological investigations carried out in the city in 2012 identified traces of former road surfaces beneath the present Bridge Street however no dating evidence was recovered. (6)
