Full Description

Different preliminary notes published on the 1998 excavations at the Infirmary Field provide conflicting information on the possibility of Saxon remains surviving in this area. One brief note, for example, mentions that an identified pebble surface may date to the Saxon period (4), however, a level spread of pebbles and sandstone fragments was mentioned by the draft excavation report, but was not referred to explicitly as a potential Saxon period feature (1). The report states that the stratigraphic relationship between these deposits and a medieval cobbled road surface was unclear, and that no dating evidence was found in direct association (1).
