Summary

The Norman font (at the church) is evidence of an early church and there is no reason to believe that the priest who held the living in and before 1189 was the first incumbent. Grappenhall was a Rectory in the time of Henry III (1216-72). The Rectory of Grappenhall is mentioned in a bill of grievances dated 1352, lodged by Roger de Cestre (or Shipbrook), parson of Grappenhall, against Sir John Daniers. 'One Parsonage House' is mentioned in Terrier of the Glebe lands of the Parsonage of Grappenhall which was exhibited at the visitation held at Chester in 1696. The precise location of the earlier Rectory is unknown (see CHER 467/2/2).
