Full Description

Set over a soil horizon that might represent Saxon period cultivation soil (CHER 9029) was a linear spread of gravel, apparently forming a track way along the northern edge of the excavation area represented by ECH2816 (4). It was aligned parallel to the former Roman buildings at this location, about 9 – 10m south of the inside face of the city wall, and composed of a thin layer of gravel or small cobbles apparently just laid on the surface of the soil (4). It also appeared to have been chambered southwards, and in patches disturbed by later activities.
