Full Description

At the site of the former Hunter Street School, a Saxon period pit, roughly circular, about 2.25m in diameter and 1.3m deep, was recorded (4). It contained soft dark, almost black sediment with a large amount of Roman masonry blocks concentrated near the top of the pit fill. A complete vessel of Chester ware was recovered. The excavators suggested that the position of the pit, between the sites of two Roman barracks may be significant, indicating a desire to avoid the difficulty of digging through these structures (4).
