Full Description

An area of paving dating to the Saxon period was found during excavations at the site of the former Hunter Street School between 1979 and 1982 (Trench VI, in the northern part of the area). The sandstone rubble comprising the paving lay embedded into the surface of the dark earth layer (CHER 9023), and included some fragments of tile and cobbles, and while it was disturbed by later activities, it did not appear to be well formed in places (4). The excavators interpreted these areas of rough paving as attempts to improve areas of the compound which had become particularly muddy, and to provide a pathway across it (4).
