Full Description
Following the gradual abandonment of the barrack blocks in this area of the fortress, the buildings appear to have decayed over a period of some years in the mid third to early fourth century with evidence to indicate the collapse of at least one barrack roof (1)
Evidence for the eastern end of the barrack building was encountered during archaeological investigations between 1978 and 1982 as part of the Hunter Street/Princess Street excavations. This covered a substantial area west of Northgate Street between Princess Street and Hunter Street and the excavations, carried out over a period of 4 years, encountered substantial traces of four barrack blocks in insula 22 (CHER 8300; 8413; 8163 and 8391) the store buildings in insula 21 (CHER 8403; 8420) and the masonry structure in insula 16 (CHER 8312).
