Full Description
Archaeological investigations between 1978 and 1982 as part of the Hunter Street/Princess Street excavations uncovered evidence of a large pit at Hunter Street.
The evidence comprised a substantial rectangular deep pit cut into the bedrock in the north eastern corner of insula 21 near Hunter Street. The pit measured some 15m by 5m wide and 2m deep and the sides were supported by massive timber posts c.0.25m square however there was no indication as to its purpose and shortly after its construction the posts were removed and the pit in-filled with rubble and building material. By the third century the pit was levelled completely (1).
