Full Description
Evidence of a soil layer of probable Roman date was recorded in evaluation test pit 6 during investigations to the rear of the Coach and Horses pub on Northgate Street in 2007. The soil was recorded at a depth of just 0.30m below current ground level and contained only Roman material.
Further evidence of a soil layer was recorded in several other trenches during the same investigation (trenches 1, 2 & 3) at a similar depth of between 0.20m -0.36m below current ground level, however these recovered both Roman and medieval pottery (1)
