Full Description
Archaeological excavations carried out in Linenhall Street between 1961 and 1962 by F H Thompson of the Grosvenor Museum recorded further evidence of the Roman defensive system. In all 24 trenches were excavated across a substantial area with the aim of establishing the exact line and composition of the Roman defences on the western side of the fortress. Possible evidence of an interval tower was encountered in trench 12 of the excavations however it was not possible to fully excavate the feature. (1)
It was not until archaeological observations of the construction of the inner ring road carried out in 1963 that further traces of the interval tower was encountered, confirming its location some 43m north of Holy Trinity Church. Only the south east corner of the tower was exposed during the works comprising 4.37m of the rear wall and 4.34m of the south wall as foundations only. (1)
