Please read our .

Summary

Evidence of a series of ovens were encountered during archaeological investigations immediately adjacent to Holy Trinity Church in the 1960s. The structural evidence comprised a masonry and clay structure approximately 0.60m high at the northern end of the former building associated with at least one ash pit and a stoke hole. The oven was measured at 2.6m long although its width was uncertain. Traces of at least one two other ovens were also encountered. The area between the rampart and the internal buildings was known as the intervallum. The inner half of this strip was occupied by the perimeter road (via sagularis). Backing onto the rampart was a series of 'rampart buildings' and bread ovens.
