Please read our .

Summary

Limited trial trenching carried out at 14 - 18 Duke St. in 1990 produced evidence of an extensive Roman building, described as 'of considerable size, quality and sophistication'. Two construction phases were discernible, both in the differences in texture and colour of the mortar used and in the relationship between two wall foundations. One wall had an apsidal-like curve. No fragments of pilae were found, but combed box tile fragments suggest a heating system.
