Full Description
During excavations to the rear of the former Grosvenor Club on Vicar’s Lane in 1989, evidence that a substantial linear feature predating two Roman buildings (CHER 8453, CHER 8523) and an alleyway (CHER 8524) was recorded (1). Although this feature was not excavated, the northernmost Roman building and the alleyway had both, at some point in their history, subsided into this underlying linear feature, necessitating extensive repairs and rebuilding of the later structures (1). The excavators suggested that the feature may represent a ditch or drain predating the construction of the buildings at this location.
