Full Description

Traces of an alley on an east-west alignment between the site of the ‘Elliptical’ building and the barrack type block to the north was recorded during archaeological investigations in the 1960s. The alley appears to have remained throughout the Roman period despite several changes of use on the site of the elliptical building although it would appear to have suffered some decline during the mid second century ‘military hiatus’ period when a urinal was inserted into the alley surface. (1)

A urinal soakaway pit was also recorded in the alley between the ‘elliptical’ building (CHER 8160) and the barrack type block (CHER 8404) with finds of a late first century date recovered from it. (2)
