Full Description

Traces of early Roman activity recorded at the Northgate Brewery site during archaeological investigations between 1974-75 comprised a series of pits and stake holes believed to represent construction activity during the late first century and the early years of the fortress. (2)

The evidence comprised a number of stake holes, some of which appeared more random in pattern, however the densest concentration of features comprised two linear arrangements of holes possibly forming an east and south line of a temporary structure with another concentration towards the centre of the internal space. (2)

At least one cess pit was recorded however several other pits appear to have been filled with clean sand and may have been used to create a level construction surface for the later buildings (2)
