Full Description
Traces of a Roman structure interpreted as a Centurion’s house was recorded during archaeological investigations at the Northgate Brewery in 1972 from Area 008 near the Northgate Street frontage. The evidence comprised fragmentary remains of masonry including approximately 2.5m of sandstone rubble foundation on a north-south alignment with a second parallel wall recorded 5m to the east. Traces of a cross wall was recorded perpendicular to the first wall and may have joined the second however a junction was not encountered. (1)
The north-south aligned foundations were interpreted as an external feature while the other walls were interpreted as possible internal features of a centurion’s house. (1)
