Full Description
Traces of a Roman rampart building to the south of the North Wall was recorded during archaeological investigations at the Northgate Brewery in 1972-73. Faint traces of an earlier timber framed structure are suggested by the presence of two timber posts near the western most internal wall and a number of rock cut slots underneath the central room.
The rampart structure comprised the foundations of the southern external wall along with substantial remains of the east and west external walls. Two internal walls confirm the typical plan of a long structure divided into three roughly equal sized rooms. As little attempt was made to terrace the natural slope of the area beneath the structure the rooms progressively stepped down from east (the highest) to west (the lowest). (1)
Internal floor surfaces comprised a base layer of compacted orange clay overlain by a later floor or opus signinum. (1)
