Monument record 8249 - Roman north-south alley at Crook Street

Summary

Large scale archaeological investigations carried out in the Crook Street area in the 1970s identified a number of Roman structures, however the results have yet to be published in full. Several street and alley surfaces were recorded providing access to the barrack blocks of the First Cohort known to have existed in this area. The northern end of an alley was recorded to the west of a building interpreted as a centurion's (officer's) house.

Full Description

Traces of a second narrow alley approximately 2.21m wide was recorded to the west of the centurion’s house (CHER 8499) during archaeological investigations at Crook Street in 1973. Several surfaces interspersed with accumulation layers were encountered indicating a prolonged period of use. (1)
