Monument record 8283 - Early Roman construction activity at Crook Street

The earliest phase of activity recorded during archaeological investigations at Crook Street in 1973 comprised a series of levelling layers predating the construction of the fortress in the late first century. The levelling process involved the removal of any obstacles and the infilling of hollows to produce suitable building platforms. De-turfing was also carried out across the area with the removed turfs presumably reused for the earth rampart. (1)

A series of post and stake holes were identified in this phase of activity although no apparent conclusion could be drawn as to their purpose. (1)
