Full Description

Evidence of Roman occupation to the rear of No 6 King’s Buildings was recorded during archaeological investigations carried out by Prof Newstead in 1921. Two trenches cut on a north-south alignment recorded traces of a series of Roman deposits from a depth of 1.2m below ground level for a further 0.60m. (1)

The evidence from this site comprised two thin layers of charcoal within a more substantial deposit rich with Roman artefactual evidence including vessel glass, pottery of a late first century date, coarse pottery including some Celtic designs, lead glazed ware and black burnished ware. (1)
