Full Description
Recent excavations of the amphitheatre between 2004 – 2007 (ECH5048), revealed a kerbed, metalled roadway, running on a straight (not curved) east-west axis adjacent to Amphitheatre 1’s north end (1) (please see 8469 for a summary of this phase of the amphitheatre, and the related monuments for additional detail). This metalled surface had been established at some point prior to the construction of an external stair against the amphitheatre’s outer wall (CHER 8469/4), as the latter feature cut the surface. These elements have survived because the construction of Amphitheatre 2 and its more substantial, extensive outer wall, sealed and protected these features, while also protecting evidence of more ephemeral timber structures outside the first amphitheatre at this location (CHER 8489) (1).
