Full Description
Excavations in Abbey Green between 1975 and 1977 recorded a timber phase interval tower in Area 1 of the excavations. The evidence comprised three post pits c0.35m square and spaced at a distance of 4m north-south and 4.25m east-west on the western edge of the excavation area. Each pit had been cut into the bedrock and had a ramped rear edge in order to facilitate construction. The earth rampart was then built over and around the tower. (2).
In the second century (phase 4) the timber interval tower was replaced in stone some distance to the east (CHER 8217). (1)
