Full Description

Traces of early Roman construction was recorded during archaeological investigations at Deanery Field in 1928 by Prof Newstead. A barrack block to the south had previously be recorded in 1924 (CHER 8245) while a centurion’s house (CHER 8250) was located a short distance to the north separated by an alley or passageway (CHER 8351). (1)

Two post holes were recorded in the alley, one in line with the east wall of the barracks block and a second in line with the partition wall with a wooden beam on a north-south alignment linking the two. As these features were located below the level of the earliest activity in the adjoining structures they were interpreted as part of a scaffolding system during the construction of the barracks.
