Monument record 8361 - Roman rampart building (No 2) at Abbey Green

Please read our .

Summary

Evidence of a timber framed rampart building was recorded during archaeological investigations at Abbey Green in 1975-77 to the south of the Roman north wall. The structure continued into the mid second century at which time it appears to have been partially dismantled. The area between the rampart and the internal buildings was known as the intervallum. The inner half of this strip was occupied by the perimeter road (via sagularis). Backing onto the rampart was a series of 'rampart buildings' and bread ovens. The rampart buildings were initially of timber but were rebuilt in stone about the start of the second century. Some at least were demolished as early as the middle of that century. In their stone form they contained three rooms and measured 12.3m x 7.3m. They were often arranged in groups of three and may have served as mess-rooms, one rampart building serving two barracks.

Full Description

Evidence of a timber framed rampart building was recorded during archaeological investigations at Abbey Green in 1975-77 to the south of the Roman North Wall comprising a beam slot on an east-west alignment interpreted as the south external wall (1)

Sometime in the late first century or early second century the rampart building was rebuilt in stone. More extensive remains of this structure could be identified comprising the eastern two rooms of the building with traces of a third to the west. The evidence for the walls comprised rubble foundations and walls of narrow coursed sandstone. The structure continued into the mid second century at which time it appears to have been partially dismantled and a series of ovens were constructed instead (CHER 8365).
