Summary

A series of archaeological investigations carried out at the Deanery Field in the 1920s and 1930s recorded substantial evidence of Roman activity. Evidence of a north-south aligned road was recorded during archaeologial investigations in 1922 between two buildings at the Deanery Field. The road surface comprised crushed sandstone with traces of a possible kerb on the eastern side of the road.

Full Description

Archaeological investigations in Deanery Field in 1922 recorded traces of a north-south road between two barracks blocks in the north-east corner of the fortress. The evidence comprised traces of a paved footway in section I and III of the excavation. The footway encountered in section I to the west of the site comprised several pieces of reused column and bits of tumbled sandstone while that recorded in section III on the eastern side of site comprised a single line of ashlar faced stones (1)
