Monument record 8379 - Legionary Commanders House (latera praetorii east)

Please read our .

Summary

It is believed that the area immediately to the east of the headquarters building was probably occupied by the residence of the commander of the legion based at Chester (the praetorium). Archaeological evidence has, however, so far been limited to fragmentary discoveries of hypocaust chambers, floor surfaces and wall foundations. To date, only small areas have been available for investigation with fragments of walling to the rear of Northgate Street and Eastgate Street, a possible hypocaust and lead piping from Eastgate Street and floor surfaces from Northgate Street.
