Summary

A narrow Roman road surface was recorded between two barrack buildings at Eastgate Street in 1959. The surface comprised a crushed sandstone surface with a possible drain on its western edge.

Full Description

Traces of a north-south aligned road surface were recorded during excavations to the rear of No 37-43 Eastgate Street in 1959 (then the premises of Woolworth & Co.).

The road comprised a heavily compacted sandstone metalled surface approximately 4.21m wide with a sand surface believed to be a drainage channel c.0.80m wide on its western edge. (1)
