Monument record 8157 - Roman rampart building (No 22) at Weaver Street

Please read our .

Summary

The evidence from Weaver Street was limited to internal floor surfaces at the southern end of the presumed building. The area between the rampart and the internal buildings was known as the intervallum. The inner half of this strip was occupied by the perimeter road (via sagularis). Backing onto the rampart was a series of 'rampart buildings' and bread ovens. The rampart buildings were initially of timber but were rebuilt in stone about the start of the second century. Some at least were demolished as early as the middle of that century. In their stone form they contained three rooms and measured 12.3m x 7.3m. They were often arranged in groups of three and may have served as mess-rooms, one rampart building serving two barracks.

Full Description

A possible rampart building was recorded during archaeological investigations at Weaver Street in 1994.

Trench 4 adjacent to Weaver Street and inside the fortress walls recorded traces of a possible structure in the section of the trench only with a wall comprising shaped but undressed stones bonded with what appeared to be a loose mortar [Context 76]. Several layers recorded beneath the feature suggest a number of construction or make up levels beneath the possible structure. (1)
