Full Description
Traces of an early Roman structure were recorded during excavations to the rear of 25 Bridge Street in 2001. Although no trace of walls survive, there is evidence to suggest at least one floor level. The earliest deposit from Trench C was a layer of sandstone brash that unfortunately was not fully investigated but was later interpreted as the primary floor layer over which an accumulation of soil mixed with tile, mussel shell and charcoal was recorded. A second clay floor surface then overlay that containing pottery of a late first to mid second century date. The accumulation of soil and waste over this clay surface produced evidence of charcoal and iron working waste. (1)
